DAVAO CITY — Stop. Breathe. Contemplate. And eat samosa. Samo-what, you might ask.
Samosa is much like the Filipino empanada (pie). The only difference is the spice, which can be quite hot, and the vegetarian filling.
Samosa is not common in Davao City. In fact, we think the only place you can buy these pies is at the Indian Mini-Mart (House of Spices), just across the Saint Paul Church in Juna Subdivision, in Matina.
Indian Mini-Mart is the first Indian grocery store in Davao; it sells authentic Indian spices, pickles, flour, lentils, tea, and many more. It also sells delicious homemade frozen products like fresh yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese lumpia, chili cheese lumpia, kababs, chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, roti, naan, and, of course, different types of samosa.
Aside from the low prices, these foods can be quite an experience to have. I have tried Indian food before and I must tell you the ones sold at Indian Mini-Mart are among the best I’ve ever tasted. Especially their samosa, which is one of a kind. You must try it and judge for yourself. It is worth it. (Rizza Joy R. Mananquil/davaotoday.com)
