The president and three members of a union in Compostela Valley were shot by unidentified men on Friday, the latest in the series of attacks against activists, peasants and unionists in the Philippines. The shooting, according to a report by Davao Todays Cheryll D. Fiel, is likely related to the victims struggle to improve the wages and conditions of workers in one of the countrys largest banana-exporting companies.

[...] Amancio Carmelo, the secretary-general for Southern Mindanao of the progressive peasant group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, survived an assassination attempt this morning. The attempt on Carmelo’s life is the latest in the series of attacks against political activists, many of them members and leaders of the KMP. Last month, men believed to be government agents ambushed banana plantation workers who are members of a workers union in Compostela valley. One of the victims eventually died in the hospital.
