BAY AREA PINOYS CAST THEIR VOTES IN 2007 NATIONAL ELECTIONS
16 April 2007 – Consul General Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez of the Philippine Consulate in San Francisco, California, U.S.A. reported to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo that the Filipinos in the Bay Area already started to cast their votes for the 2007 Philippine National Elections.
Mr. Antonio Menchavez, a 63-year old Cebu native who is currently a security officer at the Philippine Center building in San Francisco, personally delivered his ballot to the Consulate during the first day of elections, 14 April 2007. This was received by members of the Special Ballot Reception of and Custody Group (SBRCG) including Consul Anthony Mandap, Mr. Cesar Cruz and Mr. John Jiao.
The first ballot received by the Consulate through mail was from Mr. Martin S. Ong of Stockton, California. This was received by SBRCG member Mr. Benedict Gutierrez.
With the expected 4,842 ballots, Consul General Sanchez expressed hope that all registered overseas absentee voters in the Bay Area would indeed go out to vote and vote wisely during the election period.
“I assure all our kababayans that we will carry out our duty as election officers with the utmost professionalism and dedication,” Consul General Sanchez added.
She also encouraged fellow Filipinos to start mailing their ballots early in order to reach the Consulate before 12 midnight of 13 May 2007 (PST), otherwise they will be considered invalid by the Commission on Elections.
The election period in the Philippines would officially close at 3:00 P.M. on 14 May 2007 in Manila, or 12 midnight of 13 May in San Francisco time.
The counting of ballots would officially begin at 12:01 A.M. on 14 May 2007 to be conducted by members of the Consulate designated as Special Board of Election Inspectors. END
