NUJP Davao Denounces Attacks on Journalists

MANILA — The militant Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) condemned the latest attack on the media by forces out to silence the truth in the country. This time motorcycle riding assailants attacked Delfin “Sonny” Mallari Jr., a correspondent of the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) and has covered stories of peasants in the area and is close to KMP. According to Danilo “Ka Daning” Ramos, secretary general of KMP, “what they did to Sonny was despicable and dastardly, Sonny was just out performing his job as a straight reporter and a very good one at that,”

“Justice must be served immediately and the perpetuators and their backers should be jailed post haste. We believe that the attack is definitely political and work related. Sonny has constantly exposed the illegal mining in Quezon and the atrocities of the military against peasants. We believe that they are behind the attacks,” said Ramos.

“The military are not only targeting leftist activities but also journalists who expose the truth of the real state of our nation. The AFP and the Macapagal-Arroyo administration are so afraid of the truth, that snuffing lives is their way of hiding it,” added the peasant leader.

“We hope that Sonny will get well soon and that his safety be assured so that those who tried to kill him will not return and so that he can continue his work in serving the people. We will also send a delegation to check up on him and see that he recovers fast,” ended Ramos. # # #
