DAVAO CITY - Five towns in Compostela Valley are placed under areas of immediate concern of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) due to heightened communist insurgency in those places.

Sr. Supt. Nestor Quinsay, Compostela Valley police director, identified the five as Monkayo, Laak, New Bataan, Pantukan and Montevista.

He said members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) are continuously “sowing terror” in these areas.

Since January, Comval police have recorded at least 15 atrocities committed by the rebels. Also confiscated 33 firearms since January, according to Quinsay.

He said police stations in the province have been placed on heightened alert and the police are also conducting daily checkpoints in these towns.

Quinsay said they are also requesting additional soldiers “to augment” their operations in the province.

He said the police are also conducting “weekly conferences” with the Comelec.

Quinsay said a “peace covenant” will also be made soon among local candidates in the province. (PNA)
