MANILA — Lakas-CMD and Team Unity Senatorial candidate Cesar Montano urged the graduating class of Lyceum of the Philippines to use their talents and educational know-how to uplift the conditions of the majority of the people. Speaking yesterday at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) for the 57th commencement exercises of his alma mater where he studied civil engineering, Montano used his own life history as an example to encourage the graduates to “aim high.” He said that one lesson that he learned from his lawyer-father is “to be able to get the eagle, aim for the sky.”

Montano also bewails the prevailing “moral bankruptcy” as one the major reasons why the country has stagnated. He said that if only funds are used properly, many good projects that could benefit the poor could be done. He cited the Gawad Kalinga efforts which has tremendous impact on housing and yet uses minimal funding.

Montano sees “social justice” as the answer to bridge the gap between the privileged few and the majority who are mired in poverty. For Montano, if the poor, like the barangay tanods and health workers could be given access to better social services like shelter, health care, nursery, and preparatory education, this nation could still be saved. Quoting Rizal, the role he played in his award winning movie Jose Rizal, the youth is the “hope of the fatherland.” For Montano, the molding of the youth should start at the young age of two years old. According to him this is the age that they should be “taught the values of truth and righteousness”.

Cesar Montano is a product of the public education system of Sta. Ana, Manila. Through sheer hard work, determination and talent, he rose in the show business world to become a respected actor, director, movie producer, and singer-composer. Admittedly a neophyte in politics, Montano is entering the political arena because of his desire to be of further service to the nation. davaotoday.com
