Woodside, New York – Anakbayan NY/NJ, the local Filipino American youth advocacy group, took it upon themselves last Saturday to inform the Filipino community on the Felisa Garcia case. They sponsored a full investigation for the unexplained death of Felisa “Fely” Garcia, 58, a Filipina domestic caregiver who died from an alleged suicide last March 14 in the Bronx.
Along with the set up of an informational table on the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and 70th Street, they generated over $250 in donations for the Garcia family and over 100 signatures for the family-endorsed “Justice for Fely” petition in the span of only 3 hours. The youth organization stressed that they wholly support a full investigation of all the parties involved, especially Garcia’s employer since she stated in one of her letters that she had experienced “abuse and harassment”.
Jessabelle Vega of Anakbayan NY/NJ stated that “Outreaching to the local Filipino community is crucial in spreading the word about Fely Garcia and other issues. The importance of youth action cannot be overstated as it shows our genuine concern for the plight of all Filipinos living here in America in comparison to a confined point of view that just keeps an eye on the problems of the youth. For however long the Garcia family is not satisfied, Anakbayan will not be either and we will continue to fight for her justice.”
From the out start, Anakbayan has been a strong supporter of the “Justice for Fely” campaign, which has been spearheaded by Philippine Forum and KABALIKAT Domestic Workers Support with direct cooperation with the Garcia family legal representative, Atty. Arnedo Valera. Lorena Sanchez, Co-Coordinator of KABALIKAT praised Anakbayan for their efforts, stating that “As the youth will inherit the legacy we pass down; it is uplifting to see Anakbayan take an active role in advocating for Filipino immigrant rights. They serve as a positive role model for all Filipino youth and I know the Garcia family is appreciative of all their hard work.”
What Anakbayan accomplished in a short time period with providing pertinent information to the local Filipino community about their issues, raising funds for the Garcia family, and supporting the petition initiative, it is evident that they will be the source of inspiration for the next generation of Filipinos living here in the United States. davaotoday.com
