Philippines: No truth to reported P40-million Estrada donation, says Bayan Muna

MANILA — Bayan Muna today categorically denied a newspaper report saying the
partylist group received a P40-million donation from former President
Estrada supposedly intended for pollwatch purposes.

“The report is untrue. Such intrigue could only come from the
administration’s dirty tricks department,” said Bayan Muna
Secretary-General Nathanael Santiago.

“No meeting occurred with the former president,” said Santiago.
“Neither was there any donation solicited by or given to us.”

Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño said the intrigue is an example of squid
tactics “to divert public attention from the administration’s
intention and plans to massively cheat in the midterm elections.”

“Everyone, except for this Hello Garci administration, is interested
in honest elections. Most people want to cooperate to foil cheating
and fraud. It is both pathetic and unfortunate that some quarters
concoct stories such as this to discredit efforts to ensure clean and
credible elections. “For the pathetic administration, all joint or
coordinated pollwatching efforts are nothing but a conspiracy.”

“We will pursue cooperation with the opposition at various levels and
in various forms to protect our votes. Such a response is natural in
the face of the administration’s all-out efforts to win by hook or by
crook,” said Casiño. ###
