DAVAO CITY — “Puno ng Buhay sa Ilog na Buhay.” The Davao Association of Colleges and Schools (DACS) prepares and chooses that theme for the second environment summit on July 27-28, 2007.
The first gathering was held successfully last year with the support of the various colleges and universities in Davao, Digos, Tagum and Mati (DADITAMA) regions.
Executive Director Jimmie Loe Dela Vega in an interview, stressed that the DACS’ vision is to materialize and to encourage every student to plant at least one tree along our river banks to save our Davao River which is this year’s advocacy highlight.
The line-up of activities include research presentations, talks, animations, signing of MOA by school heads, ceremonial tree planting and a culminating concert bagged as AWIT PARA SA KALIKASAN to be held at the Holy Cross of Davao College gym on July 28 at 6:30 PM.
Exhibits are being put up in support of the promotions of the summit.
The exhibit and summit opening at the Assumption College of Davao (ACD) last July 5 was such a fruit of collaborative work both from teachers and students. In fact, a faculty gave their message of support to the summit saying that we need to save our only home-the mother earth because if we won’t who will save it then.
Mr. Allan Navales, ACD’s Community Extension Service (CES) head challenged everyone to walk the talk and become modern heroes because nature cannot forgive.
HCDC President Iris Melliza quoted the same like Mr. Navales’ and added that to win the support of the administrators, the community extension heads and environmentalists in the academe should be creative in giving information to administrators.
Finally, San Pedro College CES Director Ms. Yolly Cortezano said that caring for the environment is a social responsibility and there is really a need to integrate the issue in the academic realm.
