The barge from Manila loaded with complete materials and equipment for the rebuilding of Governor Generoso I bridge in Bankerohan has finally arrived, signaling the start of much-awaited repairs.
A portion of the Bankerohan bridge collapsed in April last year, prompting the city government to demolish it, causing traffic snarl as its adjacent bridge absorbed the two-way traffic.
The 206.64 million project is expected to be finished on or before August 14 this year.
Jerome dela Rosa, regional director of the Department of Public Work and Highways (DPWH), said in a PIA interview said the contractor is on strict orders to work overtime to ensure early completion of the project.
The Bankerohan bridge damage has caused heavy congestion in the city, stretching from the Maa road intersection along MacArthur highway in Matina all the way to Quirino avenue, on the other side of the Davao river. Of three bridges crossing the Davao river, the Bankerohan bridge is the most widely used.
Even as motorists take advantage of the parallel Bolton bridge in Ecoland, rush hours usually bring about traffic jams along Ecoland’s Quimpo boulevard and Sandawa.
De la Rosa assured the public of government’s policy to cancel the contract in favor of the government if the contractor fails to deliver the project on the completion date. (CK Kuizon with reports from PIA)
