DAVAO CITY — The Department of Health (DOH) and the City Health Office (CHO) conducted a second Free No-Scalpel Vasectomy on March 14, 2008 at the Namru Room, Department of Health Building, in Bajada.

The No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) was performed by experts from the DOH and doctors from the CHO who received training just this January from urologist Dr. Ramon Suarez of the NSV International Inc. based in the United States.

The activity aims to meet the goal of both national and local health agencies to provide quality health care for every couple, allowing them to control the size of their own family.

Dr. Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial, DOH director for southern Mindanao and Dr. Josephine Villafuerte, City Health Officer, joined efforts to launch the program for Davaoeños. The program is pursuant to the commitment of the City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to comprehensively implement programs on reproductive health in the city.

DOH and CHO will provide free medicine to NSV clients. Clients will also be given reading materials on vasectomy procedures as well as counseling from medical personnel during the activity.

Would-be vasectomy clients need not worry about the procedure for it is simple and safe. It will only take 15-20 minutes with no incision and suture, only a band aid. Only the tube where the semen passes is cut or tied. Contrary to popular belief, NSV or any kind of vasectomy has no effect on the sexual functioning or physical strength of men.

For schedules on the next procedure, would-be clients may contact Nelia Gumela of the DOH at telephone number (082)224-3011 and Joselie de los Santos at (082) 225-3859 or Leslie Sarenas of Population Division-CHO at (082) 227-3974.(CHO/PIA XI)
