DAVAO CITY Malunggay, with its many health benefits will be featured by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) at the First Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (Lohas) fair of Davao on October 15 to 18 at the Gaisano Mall in Davao City.

DTI-Davao City field office director Teolulo T. Pasawa said that health buffs flaunt that malunggay is packed with seven times the vitamin C in oranges, four times the vitamin A in carrots, four times the calcium in milk, three times the potassium in bananas, two times the protein in yoghurt and two times the iron in spinach.

Cesar Ledesma, chair of the Consumer Action for Sustainable and Healthy Lifestyle Network, Inc. (Cash-L), DTI’s partner institution for the fair, said that malunggay helps ensure the health of families and saves them a lot of money, besides being easy to grow pesticide-free

Pasawa added that the malunggay, which is known in Florida as horseradish tree, in India as the drumstick tree, in Senegal as nebeday and in Haiti as benzolive tree, doesn’t only offer health benefits but economic opportunities as well.

“It also provides business opportunities for those who wish to exploit the agri-business potentials for malunggay tea powder, all purpose oil (for medicine, cosmetics, perfume, massage, lubricant, industrial oil, bio fertilizer, animal feed and water treatment. What we need is just to unleash the potentials of the malunggay. We also have to find the necessary interventions in order to achieve its full potentials,” he said.

Pasawa and Ledesma encourage everyone to visit the three-and-a-half day first-of-its-kind fair to experience the lifestyle it advocates — a preference for naturally-grown food and locally-made products, minimal use of energy from fossil fuel, and products that are bio-degradable, thus, living a simple yet environment-friendly lifestyle that does not necessarily deprive people of the many joys of living.
