Herbal medicine inventors seek industry standards

DAVAO CITY – To protect the growing number of herbal medicine inventors in the country, a group of inventors formed Philippine Society of Traditional and Alternative Medicine Inc (Pstami) and is now coming up with guidelines to be used as standards in producing and marketing their respective products.

Edgar Delibo, an inventor himself, said that this move is the answer to the wrong marketing scheme used by some inventors employing personalities and even common individuals to attest unreliable claims on the benefits of the product.

He said that the group hopes to protect each member by securing the public that such group is following strict standards in product development, marketing, and distribution.

“We need to do this since most of the herbal medicines now distributed in the market come from Mindanao,” he said.

Delibo discovered an eye care using “Tawa-Tawa” extract as its main ingredient along with isotonic solution and mineralized water. This product can be used every day as an eye care solution for tired, weary eyes. He registered it in the Bureau of Patents and had it authorized by the Bureau of Food and Drugs.

He is just one of the 20 growing members of Pstami who will follow the same standards set forth by the membership.

The said group hopes to tap other herbal medicine inventors from other parts of the country to learn from them and at the same time share common standards that would soon strengthen the herbal medicine industry. (PIA XI)
