MATI, DAVAO ORIENTAL The Commission on Human Rights is right in saying that the Philippine Army is the top human rights violator in the region, according to Anakpawis (toiling masses) Partylist, which saw the impact of militarization in Davao Oriental
During the recent Interfaith Peace and Mercy Mission held in Brgy. Sanghay, in Mati, Davao Oriental, farmers and other local residents — members of Anakpawis in the area — expressed fears over the presence of military troops under 28th infantry battalion (IB) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in their community.
For more than a month now, more than 50 troops have been reportedly staying amidst the civilian populace and are utilizing public structures such as the barangay (village) hall, chapel and covered court.
“Based on the reports of the IPMM Mati team, there are also soldiers staying in the civilian houses, carrying with them their weapons and high powered rifles, causing anxiety among the residents, especially the children, said Pedro Arnado, Anakpawis Partylist regional coordinator.
“Our local members strongly believe that the military presence in their community has to do with their strong opposition against the looming encroachment of mining companies in the area. Military troops are here to try to intimidate our members who have been actively opposing mining as this could lead to the destruction of the environment and loss of livelihood and lives,” Arnado added.
