Food flavoring may contain salmonella, recalled

Apr. 17, 2010

DAVAO CITY—The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) warns all consumers on the possible entry of salmonella-contaminated hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) into the local market.

HVP is a flavor enhancer usually used in creamy dressings, sauces, soups, snacks, stuffing, gravies and prepared or pre-packaged meals.

The thirty brands of HVP believed to be contaminated with salmonella were manufactured by the Basic Food Flavors, Incorporated of North Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States and shipped to importer Turris Philippines, Inc. in Manila.

All products with manufacturing dates on or after September 17, 2009 are included in the recall.

DTI-Bureau of Trade Regulation and Consumer Protection (BTRCP) director Victorio Mario A. Dimagiba immediately issued a memorandum to the DTI regional offices upon receiving such news from a source abroad.

Dimagiba said that the BTRCP has also informed the Department of Health-Food and Drugs Administration (DOH-FDA) regarding this concern.

DTI regional director Marizon S. Loreto said that the provincial offices of the department in the region have already been informed of the recall and necessary steps have already been made.

“Our provincial offices have already been instructed to coordinate with their respective local government units (LGUs) and other concerned groups to further disseminate the information,” she said.

Loreto encouraged consumers to report to the nearest DTI office should they find products cited above. (DTI11)
