DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The City Veterinarian Office (CVO) has warned the public against the selling of ‘double-dead’ meat especially during the holiday season.

Assistant City Veterinarian Esther Cherrie Rayos said during Monday’s Kapehan sa SM that their office is intensifying the campaign starting at the slaughter houses up to the display stalls in market centers “to ensure the health and safety of consumers.”

As the demand for meat is expected to increase in the coming days, Rayos also warned the public to be vigilant with respect to the quality of meat they buy.

“Consumers must pay attention to the appearance and smell of the meat,” she advised as she called on everyone to report to her office any suspected ‘double-dead’ meat for verification and confiscation.

The CVO said that meat vendors should have secured all the necessary documents like the meat inspection permits which are required to be put on display conspicuously in the market stalls.

Meanwhile, it also assured the public of enough supply of meat for the holiday season.

“We have enough for the city despite the devastation that typhoon ‘Pablo’ brought to the livestock industry in other provinces,” Rayos said.

She added the city’s livestock industry is capable enough to meet the increasing demand of meat for the coming Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Suppliers from Bukidnon, General Santos and Digos City, Rayos said, also contribute up to five to 10 percent of the city’s supply of meat.  “They regularly deliver livestock to Davao City,” she said.  (Alex D. Lopez/davaotoday.com)
