DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) cancels the tsunami alert it issued 9:15 AM, February 6.

In its bulletin posted at 12:15 PM today, Phivolcs said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) reported a 0.91m tsunami recorded by the tide gauge in Santa Cruz Islands.  However, the recorded tsunami wave height in Vanuatu which is closer to the Philippines, is only 0.26m.

Noting that the current trend of observed wave heights suggested that “the threat of a hazardous tsunami has passed,” Phivolcs then cancelled the tsunami alert in the Philippines.

At 9:12 AM, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon Islands.  The epicenter was located at 10.9ºS, 165.1ºE with a depth of 33 km.

The PTWC sea level monitoring stations, according to Phivolcs, had confirmed the occurrence of a tsunami due to the earthquake.  It was then that the coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean were put under Tsunami Alert Level 1, including Mindanao’s four provinces: Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur.  (Marilou Aguirre-Tuburan/davaotoday.com)
