More IDPs continue to remain at evacuation centers in North Cotabato

Nov. 06, 2008

Kidapawan City-More than 20 families or 120 individuals still remain at cramped evacuation center in Nalapaan in Pikit, North Cotabato. The said families are living in a small area, one kilometer away from the national highway.

Most of these families came from Barangay Kadingilan, Pikit in North Cotabato. They were forced to leave their communities for fear of being caught in armed encounters between the government troops and the MILF rebels.

Late last week, two residents of Nalapaan, Pikit complained in a Central Peace Dialogue that they were victims of abduction and torture and suspected military elements as the alleged perpetrators. The military in the area however denied the allegations.

Peoples organizations and local church leaders in Pikit maintained that these affected areas are part of the declared Spaces for Peace and are supposed to be spared from further conflict as a result armed confrontations and military operations in the area.

Residents in these areas have been making calls to the military and the MILF forces to spare their communities from further harassments so they can live peacefully. (CLC-EBC/ICC Kid/PIA 12)
