DAVAO CITY, Philippines — “It talks about the wonder of having to watch a live music theater.”

This was the assurance of Cecil Hidalgo, director of the musical theater, ‘Something Wonderful, Something Musical,’ which will be shown on December 7 and 8 at the SM Lanang Premiere’s Cinema 6.

The title, according to musical director Bong Aviola, was inspired “from one of the songs of the King and I,” a 1956 musical film by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II which was based on Margaret Landon’s 1944 novel ‘Anna and the King of Siam.’

The December stage musical will feature songs of the 1965 movie ‘The Sound of Music’ based on the 1949 memoir by Maria Augusta von Trapp, ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.’  It will also feature songs from the 1958 movie ‘South Pacific’ based on James Michener’s 1947 book, the Pulitzer-prized ‘Tales of the South Pacific.’

“We have scholars chosen for their talents and potential,” Aviola said on Wednesday’s Club 888 at the Marco Polo Hotel.

Aviola heads Musikademy, a Davao-based team of voice, piano, guitar and music theater instructors.  He added, The Himig Singers, the city’s premier concert chorus, “will also be joining.”

As the musical theater gets near, organizers are asking for support, especially for their talents who are as young as eight and nine year olds.

“It’s hard for them to perform in a place that’s half-empty,” Aviola said, thus, he’s inviting everyone to support and watch the show.

“We have around 48 casts.  This is good for the family, young and old.  This is very entertaining,” said Hidalgo.

Meanwhile, one of the musical’s main actors, Mike Dakudao, said that “Ang hirap humanap ng pondo at mga sponsors to put up a show (It’s so hard to look for funds and sponsors to put up a show),” thus, the musical is “worth the people’s time and money.”  (Marilou Aguirre-Tuburan/davaotoday.com)
