Practice responsible journalism, DepEd chief urges campus journalists

ASUNCION, Davao del Norte – A high ranking official from Department of Education in Davao del Norte has urged the campus journalists to “practice responsible journalism.”

“I want all of you to be responsible with your writings,” said Josephine L. Fadul, schools division superintendent, during Friday’s opening program of Division Secondary Schools Press Conference  (DSSPC) held at Asuncion, Davao del Norte.

“You must not use the power of journalism to malign or defame other people,” Fadul said.

Fadul explained to the campus journalists the importance of integrating honesty when joining competitions.

“Even though this is just a competition, we aim to produce winning journalists that are intellectually good. We don’t want you to win at the expense of your values,” Fadul said.

This year’s Division Secondary Schools Press Conference  (DSSPC) theme is “Empowering resilient communities through campus journalism.”

“This year’s theme is very timely since our nation recently faced various calamities. Journalism can be used as a means to empower the lives of other people by giving them accurate information,” she said.

Friday’s event was attended by 1,000 campus journalists from various public and private schools in Davao del Norte.

The DepEd Division of Del Norte said it would aim to hone and select the Top 5 campus writers in newswriting, editorial-writing and cartooning, feature-writing, sports-writing, copy-reading and headline-writing.

One winner from group events such as “collaborative publishing” and “radio broadcasting” will also be selected.

The winners will represent the Davao del Norte Division to the Regional Schools Press Conference in January 2015 in Davao City.

“I hope you will learn more from this event and make yourselves better bearers of truth,” Fadul said. (davaotoday.com)
