DAVAO CITY, Philippines—Anchored on its theme, “Unity in Diversity,” the winning entry highlights the best of Davao City for this year’s 2017 Destination: Davao Video Making Competition.

Archlight Productions’ “Unity in Diversity” was unanimously judged as the winner of the contest participated in by 30 local aspiring filmmakers.

“In our own little way, we want the whole world to see that there is no racial barriers in Davao — that there is unity in our diversity,” said winning filmmaker James Matthew Badana of Archlight Productions.

The winning videos were selected by a jury with outstanding filmmaking, video production, and communications backgrounds headed by broadcaster and educator Derf Maiz.

“To tell a story in a three to five minutes video is difficult, that’s why we looked for a compelling storyline that delivered the message clearly — that life is here,” Maiz said.

“We particularly looked for a video that showcased what Davao truly is, not only its tourist spots, the food, but we wanted to see human relationships, the interaction among people in the communities in the face of challenges,” he added.

The video competition, which was in its third year, encouraged Dabawenyos and Davao City visitors to come up with original videos to promote Davao City as a desirable place to invest, visit, or live in.

Participants were asked to submit a one to three-minute video to be named the official Destination: Davao winner for 2017. The winners were announced on July 17 on the official Facebook page of the City Government of Davao.

Second place went to Aninag Productions’ “Home”, a video about a Dabawenya, who found the meaning of home in the places, faces, flora and fauna of Davao City. The third place went to John Glenn Lambayon’s “The Davao Hyperlapse” — which focused on a cinematic technique portraying Davao City under a whole new vantage point.

The contest also awarded the People’s Choice Award to Fluffy Bunny Productions for their video “Davoh!”. It received 69,141 Facebook likes and views.

The other judges were journalist Rudolph Ian Alama and communications specialist Cyrus Jeff Bringas.

Unity in Diversity will receive P30,000, while Home will receive P20,000. The third place winner, meanwhile, will receive P10,000. The People’s Choice Award will also receive P5,000.

Six other videos, including Davoh!, will each receive P5,000 cash consolation prize. (davaotoday.com)
