DAVAO CITY KARAPATAN Southern Mindanao Region condemns in the strongest possible terms the death threat received by Bishop Delfin Callao, Jr. the vice-chairperson of KARAPATAN Southern Mindanao Region.
Last December 31, 2007 at around 2:50 in the afternoon, a 45 years old human rights defender Bishop Delfin Callao, Jr. and his family preparing for the New Years Eve received a text message from 0920-601-2624 saying Mag-ingat ka, Bilang na ang Oras mo.
KARAPATAN Secretary General Kelly M. Delgado said Bishop Delfin Callao, Jr. the bishop for the Diocese of Southern Mindanao Region was elected last August 2005 during the regional congress of KARAPATAN-SMR as Vice-Chairperson. Since then, he is active in advancing the campaigns for human rights, Justice and Peace in the region.
Bishop Callao, Jr. is just one of the church workers/personalities who are helping the poor and oppressed people in the quest for just and lasting peace. Delgado added.
It only shows that the people who are helping the poor continued to be the target of the state repression. This harassment is not new. Delgado said.
Last year, the chairman of KARAPATAN Task Force Militarization Priel Booc a lay worker of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines received also the same threat. As the new year started, now the vice-chairman of KARAPATAN. Delgado said.
This is a desperate move of the state agents to people who are doing Godly works to the Filipino people. If they think by means of threat they can silence us, they are wrong. Delgado said.
As human rights workers, we are committed to advance and defend peoples rights amidst odds. Delgado concluded.
