The skills competition is a biennial event conducted by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) aimed to assess the capacity and competence of tech-voc trainees, graduates, and industry workers.

The participants will compete in various areas such as automobile technology, beauty therapy, electrical installation, graphic design technology, Information Technology (IT) network systems administration and software solution, web design, mechanical engineering, welding, motorcycle technology and others.

Gaspar S. Gayon, regional director of TESDA 11 said they are introducing the power rice machinery skill area as a new field as part of their program to urge students to learn agricultural machinery.

“It’s not just a competition. Practically it’s a demonstration of the students on how far have they gone in developing the competencies beyond the classroom, beyond the workshop area,” Gayon said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw press conference on Monday, November 6, at SM City here.

Top three winners will be given medals and cash prizes amounting P5,000, P3,000, and P2,000 respectively while first place winners of the various competitions will advance in the next phase and shall represent the region in the Mindanao Zonal Battle of the Best in December 2017.

Awarding ceremony will be held on Tuesday, November 7 at the Regional Trading Center – Korea Philippines Vocational Training Center (RTC-KPVTC) in Tibungco, this city.

Gayon added that they are hopeful that there will be qualifiers from the region to represent the country in the 12th ASEAN Skills Competition in Thailand in 2018 and in the World Skills Competition in Russia in 2019. (davaotoday.com)
