Davao Oriental’s Mt. Hamiguitan Vies for Hiyas ng Turismo

DAVAO ORIENTAL — Awed by its distinct tourism site which is the Pygmy Forest in Mt. Hamigutan, the municipality of San Isidro is destined to bring honor to the province of Davao Oriental.

Just recently, Mt. Hamiguitan was nominated as Hiyas ng Turismo, an activity designed by the Department of Tourism to discover more the tourism potentials in the country.

This was revealed by Lyrna June Palma, the Provincial Tourism Officer in the Province of Davao Oriental, who also said that the nomination was made in the national level.

Im sure that the people of San Isidro are now ready to boost their local tourism, Ms. Palma said .


Anton Edquilla, the Municipal Tourism Officer of San Isidro, bared that for Region 11, only Mt. Hamiguitan of San Isidro was nominated.

And if only for this, the residents of San Isidro are optimistic that the grandeur of Mt. Hamiguitan will prevail from the array of other tourism destinations vying for the prestige.

The Municipal Tourism Officer also disclosed that the nomination encouraged the local government of San Isidro to strengthen its information campaign particularly about Mt. Hamiguitan.

We will start from the barangays. The Mayor is so enthusiastic to pursue this move now. The nomination inspires us all the more to really invest on our tourism potential he said.

The winning Hiyas ng Turismo will be featured in the Discovery Channel.

Ms. Palma also said that this is already a part of the Passport to Adventure project of the provincial government of Davao Oriental.

Mt. Hamiguitan mightily stands at 5, 355 feet above sea level, and gained fame through its century old Bonsai plants.

Bonsai plants also stand from 1 foot to 5 feet, covering almost 1,000 hectares of Kapatagan Valley.

San Isidro is the smallest town of Davao Oriental, covering a land area of 20,520 hectares. It is three and half hours drive from Davao City. (PIA/DXHM)
