DAVAO CITY — Cyber gamers in Davao City are all set for the first and biggest “cyber expo” scheduled this month.

“Cyber Expo 2007” would gather the best cyber gamers, graphic designers, animators and computer lovers under one roof.

Set on June 22 to 24, the said event is expected to be the start for a more active “cyber culture” among Davao locals.

Event organizer Kitsi Avila claimed that the city lacks the needed push to enliven cyber gaming in this part of the country.

Other areas like Manila and Cebu have regular cyber activities like this. And its about time that Davao did the same since we have lots of gamers and animator potentials here, he said.

Organizers said that the general public has little knowledge on “cyber culture,” whose image remains that of an underground activity. Avila explained that there is so much in cyber gaming that the public could benefit from. One is the chance to develope ingenuity and creativity by encouraging potential animators.

There are plenty of potential animators but we just dont have animation schools that can teach these kids. They would have to go to other places to study, he said.

The Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is starting to offer scholarship grants for potential animators.

Avila said that this is just one starting move for the cyber gaming enthusiasts to work out their plans for the industry.

The event is also aimed to promote responsible use of cyber space and technology as it includes a series of forum to discuss important issues.

The three-day activity will feature cyber games, graphic animations and design competition, speed assembly competition, computer show, exhibits, and forum on cyber space responsibility. (PIA XI /Mai Gevera)
