DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Best regional films from all over the country is set to take stage in an open-air community screening in Nabunturan town, Compostela Valley province.

Dubbed as Cinema Rehiyon, the ninth annual national film festival aims to showcase and promote the best regional films in 2016 from across the country made by filmmakers from different provinces except National Capital Region.

Nabunturan Independent Film Exhibition (NABIFILMEX) Festival Director, Lawyer Karen S. Malaki, said in a press conference on Monday, July 31 at the SM City Davao here, that “since the town doesn’t have a cinema yet, the different films will be shown through a cinema-like size and an open-air inflatable screen free for Nabunturanons and visitors.”

“It’s unique because we don’t have cinemas but we have the open-air inflatable screen in which you might just see in Nabunturan. It’s like a balloon but has the same size with the screens in cinemas,” Malaki said.

The Cinema Rehiyon 9 will be held on August 22-27, the first time to be staged in a municipality.

Malaki stressed the event is an avenue to showcase the talents and skills of Nabunturanon filmmakers and other filmmakers from other regions.

“We are able to showcase the talent and skills of Nabunturanons and that’s what happens also to other regional film festivals,” Malaki said.

She also pointed that the event is also to bring people to Nabunturan to boost tourism and as well as contribute to the social development of the community.

Mindanao filmmaker Bryan Jimenez said the Cinema Rehiyon is an opportunity for them to share their films to the public.

“It’s great that we have established these local film festivals like NABIFILMEX and we are happy to see our films on big screens and it’s satisfying for us. In indie films, our utmost fulfilment is when we express our vision artistically among the public,” Jimenez said.

A total of 80 filmmakers, 20 festival directors, 20 guests, artists and jurors are expected to attend this year’s Cinema Rehiyon while the number of persons for screenings are limited to a minimum of 600 persons per day for indoor screenings while a minimum of 1000 persons per day for outdoor screenings.

Apart from the 80 best short and full length film screenings, several other activities will also be conducted such as “Master class” with an award-winning Asian filmmaker, 24-hour filmmaking competition, eco-tourism tours in tourist attractions of the province and cultural performances.(davaotoday.com)
