Singing for Yolanda: relief concerts slated

Davao City – Musicians and artists in Davao are staging benefit concerts this week to shore up donations for Typhoon Yolanda victims.

Entrance fee for one such concert in a popular music bar among youths here, comprises of contents for relief packs: canned goods, water and items for children and mothers.

Dubbed as “Hinabang: Gig for a cause for the victims of Yolanda” slated this November 13 and 14, the concert staged by Sales Bar Tekanplor was part of the music bar’s anniversary.

“As our way of giving back to the community and to show our support for the relief operations going on worldwide… we are appropriating a portion of the gate proceeds to the victims of Yolanda,” the event’s Facebook page read.

The concert will feature 14 artists from Davao and Tagum Cities such as Jad Montenegro, 8-a, Tramonto, We Ride Dynamite, As the city sleeps, Guts and Smiles, Long Bond Yellow Papers, Kwatro Medya, Botique All, Thea Pitogo, Guiltrip, Rise from Oblivion, Wasalak, Backstabells, Secret Deathwash, Stolen at Gunpoint, Utmost Fear, Friendship Lagoon, The sound of Go, Escape plan Juliet, and Jonah.

One of the concert organizers, Ma Cristina Manuel, President 2014 of JCI DuWaling Chapter, said “it’s not enough to be aware so we choose to be involved. If we can make music a way to get help, then we use it. Do what we can help.”

“Aside from showcasing local talents, we are also aware about current issues,” Manuel noted.

They will also give proceeds from their November 15 and 16 anniversary concerts for the relief.

The event is also co-sponsored by District Tree, Sabay sa Alon, Gravefresh, JCI Duwaling and TROPA Mindanao, with support from organizations Prevail, Davao Music Nation, NDFY and Orange Box Recordings.

Meanwhile, a concert featuring renowned local singers such as Chad Borja, Wency Cornejo and Himig Singers will stage a benefit concert at Abreeza Ayala Mall Activity Center at 4 to 8 pm this Sunday.

Dubbed as RELIEF SURGE: “Kapit-Bisig Dabawenyo Para sa Visayas!”, the concert will also feature Musikademy Scholars, PCDA Choir Members, Musikademy’s Fantasticats, JP Duka, Rochelle Venutti, Virtuoso Musika, Naughty Notes Band, and LCB Performing Arts Center

The organizers are asking concertgoers to donate cash, canned goods, noodles, rice, water, medicines, kitchen utensils, blankets and used clothings.

Donations can be given as early as the opening of the mall at 10 am.

The concert is held in cooperation with the Mt. Apo Lions Club, ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya, and the Archdiocese of Davao.  (Earl O. Condeza, davaotoday.com)
