HPG addresses road safety issues in Davao region

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Davao region’s Highway Patrol Group (HPG) has intensified its effort to address issues on road safety.

In Wednesday’s AFP-PNP press conference, Highway Patrol Group Operations Chief PSI. Pedro Campomanes said that vehicular accidents in the region are a result of issues like the lack of signage in accident-prone areas, as well as reckless driving that may lead to untimely death of passengers.

The recent road accident on June 1 resulted in the death of 14 workers of Franklin Bakers and injured 4 others in Barangay Astorga, Sta. Cruz town in Davao del Sur.

Campomanes told media that prior to the accidents reported this month, the HPG XI made conscious efforts to educate drivers, cooperatives as wells as the motorcycle association and enthusiasts about road safety. They also endorsed speed limits and road safety measures to all local government units to ensure road safety in the region, among those who complied is the provincial government of Compostela said Campomanes.

“We are now into double-to-triple time work to keep the public safe. Our highway patrols need to operate morning, afternoon and night especially that a lot of road construction is happening in the region.”

Part of HPG’s effort of road safety is to apprehend colurum cars that they said to have an “effective and high accomplishments” status.

Based on the report present by HPG XI, as of May 2018 they have recovered two carnapped vehicles and arrested two wanted persons for carnapping namely, Ralph Caballero and Francis Torribio.

In their continued operations on Anti- Colorum, Campomanes said they have recorded 14 apprehensions of four buses, a taxi and nine passenger vans from March to May this year.

Mostly, the HPG said, they have also apprehended drivers for violations of the Republic Act 8750 specifically the no seat-belt while driving (7), no wearing of a helmet (40) and other violations (37). (davaotoday.com)
