‘Power of Pen’ to touch on Mindanao culture

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Five prominent writers, researchers and culinary experts will grace the eight round next month of Power of Pen, a food writing event, organized by STRAM Inc, a Manila-based events organizer.

Dubbed as the Power of Pen 8: Mindanao Culinary Culture – Research and Writing Basics, it aims to teach participants the different ways in writing in the hospitality business, creating a credible food critique and communicating the culinary experience in a literary way.

The event is slated on May 19 at the Ateneo de Davao University.

Michaela Fenix and Margaux Salcedo from the Philippine Daily Inquirer will discuss on Food Knowledge and the Importance for Food Stories and Ideas, Feature Writing and writing Restaurant Reviews.

They will help aspiring food writers, marketing professionals and social media influencers come up with food reviews that market to its target readers.

Chef Datu Pendatun III, Dr.Macario Tiu and Ms.Lolita Lacuesta will speak on the history and socio-cultural narratives of the Mindanao Cuisine.

Topics that will be tackled are as follows: A Study on the Cuisine of Muslim Mindanao (Chef Datu Pendatun III), Documenting the Recipes of the Ten Tribes of Davao (Dr. Macario Tiu) and The Davao We Know: Writing to Record Socio-Cultural History (Lolita Lacuesta).

On its eight installment, Power of Pen will address the practical techniques in food writing to effectively market restaurant offerings, hotel promotions and travel pitches to both local and foreign observers.

A writing workshop will enable participants to write their personal experiences at the end of the program.

STRAM Inc., through its Power of Pen, tells that food is more than a physiological need but a propelling factor for tourism and a representation of culture and history.
