DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A local version of a technology used by ride-hailing service providers is set to be launched in Davao City before the end of 2017.

Rogelio Largo, president of Metro Davao Taxi Operators Association, said their group is currently collaborating with software developers in building a mobile application where users can book a cab.

“People in Davao will already be booking, or hailing taxi through this app and this will improve our services,” Largo told reporters on Wednesday, October 11.

This comes after Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio urged taxi operators to create an application to keep the industry in Davao “relevant and efficient.”

Duterte-Carpio during her State of the City Address (SOCA) encouraged taxi operators to invest in a single Davao Taxi app and an official taxi complaint site for Dabawenyos to access.

Meanwhile, Largo said application will also enable the city’s taxi industry to “level up.” The app will be composed of a special feedback feature where passengers can report problems such as misbehaving drivers, malfunctioning taxi units, among others.

“Taxi operators in Davao have to beat them to come up with a hailing app that will provide services comparable to if not better than those services offered by these alternative mode of transport,” Largo said.

Currently, the city has about 6,000 taxi units, which Largo pointed will be enough to serve the requirement of Davao City in the next couple of years. (davaotoday.com)
