DAVAO CITY, Philippines—A total of 37 medical students signed a memorandum of agreement with the city government of Davao on Monday, formalizing their inclusion to the city’s scholarship program granted by the local government unit.

The scholars are entitled to receive 100 percent free tuition and additional P20,000 cash allowance for books per semester.

“It’s a no-strings attached scholarship, but you are encouraged to practice in government medical facilities in the city or in the communities,” lawyer Raul A. Nadela Jr., the chief of staff of City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said in a statement Tuesday.

Nadela pointed out that the scholarship was in line with the city mayor’s desire to harness the talents of Dabawenyos pursuing medical education, but are faced with financial difficulties.

Under the expanded program, a total of 18 law students also received scholarship packages.

Early this year, the city signed a MOA with the Brokenshire College of Davao and the Davao Medical School Foundation for the expansion of the city’s Educational Benefits System for medical courses which was previously limited to members of the indigenous communities. (davaotoday.com)
