Traffic regulation, disaster preparedness to be taught in public schools – DepEd

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) here will soon start to include the traffic regulations and public safety as a subject in public schools after the City Council approved the Traffic Regulations and Public Safety Module Ordinance of Davao City.

The newly approved resolution authored by Councilor Maria Belen Acosta, chairperson of the committee on peace and public safety, mandates all public and private primary and secondary schools in Davao City to raise awareness to students on the traffic regulations and public safety measures in the city.

Acosta told media on Wednesday that the Deped-Davao City Division already launched the three different curriculums per grade levels to some pilot schools.

“The module is specially made for Davaoeños for us to be more aware to any situation we might happen to face,” said Acosta.

The fire and earthquake drill topic will be taught in Grade 1, while in Grade 4 the curriculum includes the geohazard map and safety precautions during different weather conditions. The traffic regulations and unintentional injuries and first aid kit will be included will be taught to Grade 5 to Grade 9 students.

For Grade 10, it includes the discussion on the earthquake hazards and effects while the Grades 11 and 12 will be taught of the meaning of disaster, to differentiate the risk factors underlying disasters, analyze disaster from the different perspectives such as physical, psychological, socio-cultural, economic, political and biological, among others.

Acosta expects that the soon implementation of the curriculum to students in the early stage can help the city to further become equipped and knowledgeable in a given situation.(davaotoday.com)
