DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The City Health Office (CHO) here confirmed that there is a shortage of anti-rabies vaccine for humans.

Dr. Julinda Acosta, focal person of CHO Outbreak Response Immunization (ORI), said the delayed production of vaccines from the manufacturers SANOFI and GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (GSK) caused the shortage not only in Davao City but in other areas nationwide.

“As of the moment we still have shortage of rabies vaccine for humans. In fact, this week, although we received 100 vials of rabies vaccine, it is not enough,” Dr. Acosta said during Thursday’s I-Speak media forum.

There is said to be lack of raw materials needed for the manufacture of Verorab vaccine. The Rabipur vaccine, which is manufactured by GSK in India, is also reported to be contaminated by bacteria.

Once bitten, the victim needs at least three dosages of vaccine. If after 14 days the dog dies, another fourth booster is needed to be injected to the victim.

Acosta urged all households to immunize their animal pets like dogs and cats in their respective barangays. (davaotoday.com)
