DAVAO CITY — After his candidacy for the presidential race was officially sealed, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte plans to end corruption and criminality, and to impose a firecracker, gun and liquor ban nationwide.

In Sunday’s episode of his weekly television program Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa, Duterte said however, that he would not immediately impose the ban because there would be a period of adjustment for the people.

He said that in the city, especially that it is almost Christmas, the firecracker and gun ban is not a problem.

Davao City has Ordinance No. 060-02 which prohibits the manufacture, sale, distribution, possession or use of firecrackers or pyrotechnic devices and similar explosives in Davao City. The ordinance was signed in 2002.

The Philippines has Republic Act No. 07183 or the law regulating the sale, manufacture, distribution and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices which was passed in 1991.

However, Duterte said that whatever he has imposed in Davao City, he will make happen in the whole country, which includes the liquor ban and curfew hours.

Duterte said those from Bocaue, Bulacan will get angry at his proposal but suggested that they should “look for another livelihood.” Bocaue town in Bulacan is known as the fireworks capital of the country.

He said this ordinance has kept Davao City safe with “zero casualty” of firecracker-related injury.

Meanwhile, Duterte said he is also mulling imposing a liquor ban and curfew in the country if he becomes president.

“If I become president, there will be no firecrackers, even liquor bans will be implemented and curfew. When the clock strikes 12:00 [midnight], you can only order up to 1:00 am. We will close the store selling liquors by that time in the whole country. What happened to Davao City will also happen in the whole country,” he said.

Davao City’s Ordinance No. 004-13 has amended the 1994 Ordinance, Ordinance No. 1627. The new Liquor Ban Ordinance is prohibiting the selling or serving of alcoholic beverages, including nature, wines, from 1:00 am to 8:00 am.

The city’s Curfew Ordinance also prohibits 18 years old and below from loitering between 10:00 pm to 5:00 am unless they are accompanied by their parents or guardians of legal age.

Duterte said if the public does not want his proposal, he said they should not vote for him in the elections.(With a report from May Love Deseo/davaotoday.com)
