Ordinance for Chinese-themed facade establishment urged

Oct. 25, 2018

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The Davao City Chinatown Development Council urged the passing of an ordinance requiring to be constructed or renovated establishments to have Chinese-themed façade in the Chinatown area.

Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, chair of the city council committee on tourism said, on Tuesday, that the Chinatown area is declared as a tourism developmental zone, as amended on 2013.

Alejandre said that only tourism-related projects are to be built in the area.

The Chinatown Development Council is already planning on how to further develop the area into a tourism zone, according to Alejandre.

He added that Chinatown can boost tourism in the city since it is where the Sta. Ana Wharf and Magsaysay Park are located.

“We could develop [projects] there like museums and theme parks,” Alejandre added.

However, he also said that they would still consider and renew the business permits of those existing though nonconforming establishments in Chinatown that were built before.

Chinatown is the only tourism zone in the downtown area of Davao and serves as a business district not just for the Chinese Filipinos.(davaotoday.com)
