CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 jolted parts of Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur provinces early morning on Sunday, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvocs) 10.

Wao in Lanao del Sur experienced a series of seismic activities starting at 1:48 am with 4.2 magnitude, and raised by 4.3 at 5:17 am. At 5:25 a.m., the intensity went down to 3.8, then 3.3 by 6:33 am, 3.2 by 7:56 am, 3.0 at 10:32 am, but picked up to 4.0 by 10:39 am.

Following the quake in Wao, Kalilangan in Bukidnon, which is about 18.4 kilometers from Wao had felt an intensity 5.

Meanwhile, residents in Cagayan de Oro were affected by another earthquake with intensity 1 at 10:39 am, said Marcial Labininay, Phivolcs 10 regional director, while thePhivolcs website showed the city had an intensity 3.

Other parts of Northern Mindanao were unaffected by the quake, Labininay said.

But Mae Acantilado, a resident of Barangay Macabalan, said she and her family were suddenly roused from sleep when the two-story house they were renting was shaking at about 4:00 am. “We were scared. Unlike other earthquakes we have experienced in the past, this one was stronger,” she said.

Together with her husband and 4-year old daughter, she had to wait for more than 10 seconds until the trembling subsided.

Labininay said an aftershock could be experienced as the earthquake had a depth of two kilometers.

Wao had declared a state of calamity on April 12 when a magnitude 6.0 rocked the town, affecting 14 villages and displacing at least 1,000 families. Damages reached about P25 million.(davaotoday.com)
