DAVAO CITY, Philippines – One person died in Davao del Sur while scores of families in the city evacuated as Tropical Storm (TS) Dante continues to pour heavy rains in Davao Region as it intensifies placing some areas in Eastern Samar to Signal 2 as of Tuesday morning, June 1.

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio in her Special Hour on Davao City Disaster Radio on May 31 disclosed that a total of 62 families in Barangay Talomo were evacuated around 8 in the evening on May 30 due to severe flooding.

The flood also affected the areas of Calinan where six families were evacuated, 10 families in Barangay Bago Aplaya and 12 families in Bunawan area.

With the Sunday evening inundation it prompted the mayor to urge the public to monitor the announcement from the authorities especially on evacuation orders and reminded them to maintain health protocols during evacuation.

‘’Let us remember that when pre-emptive evacuation is raised, the minimum public health standards remain. Our facemask, our alcohol, our soap and if possible our meter stick should be with us so that other people could not get near us, we should be one meter apart from them ,” she said.

Some areas in Davao Region have also been affected by the heavy downpour on Monday.

The Malalag Police Station in Davao del Sur reported that one person died on May 30.

A certain Porperio Sabate Pilapil, 71, was swept away by a strong current while he tried to cross the flood on his way home riding a bicycle. His body was found on Monday morning, May 31.

In Davao de Oro, the local governments of Monkayo and Compostela issued a suspension of class in all levels both in public and private schools and their teaching and non-teaching personnel were not required to report for work as well.

Based on the bulletin report of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) as of 1pm on May 31, TS Dante will bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Caraga and Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental.

It is expected to weaken after Wednesday as it exits from the country.
