CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – A large group of dolphins were sighted on the coast of Misamis Oriental near Opol on Friday, surprising a group who went for a swim in the area.

The sighting was caught on video by Manuel Tan when around 30 dolphins approached the speedboat he and his companions were riding.

Tan said on his social media post that he and his friends were bound to Laguindingan town for a swim when they saw the group of dolphins.

He said dolphins did not fear them as they swam and frolic in the water.

On his video, Tan said there were about more than 30 dolphins that approached them, but he said there are more of them, about a hundred, from a distance.

“We turned off the speedboat’s engine so it won’t upset them,” Tan said, adding the dolphins lingered for around 20 minutes before heading off towards the direction of the eastern part of Misamis Oriental.

Tan said they also saw baby dolphins, also called calves, among the pod.

It was not immediately clear why these aquatic mammals made their way to shallow waters or where they were going.

In the past few months, rare aquatic animals such as dolphins and whale sharks found their way to shallow waters.

In recent interviews, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the region said that it could be possible that these creatures, specifically whale sharks, ventured beyond their natural habitat in search of food. (davaotoday.com)
