Davao Today: local online news thrives for 10 years

May. 11, 2015

DAVAO CITY — Davao Today, a news and multimedia website established in 2005, joins the rest of the Davao media in a photo exhibit at the SM City Davao which runs from May 11 to May 15. The exhibit is dubbed “Let Journalism Thrive”.

Davao Today showcased screenshots of the website’s eight Home Page since 2005.

The current interface of the Davao Today website features its news photographs, headlines, stories in categories, columns, editorial cartoon and multimedia.

The advent of the internet in the late 90s to the early 2000s became an impetus for a group of journalists, tracing its roots from the now defunct Media Mindanao News Service (MMNS), to bring what it calls “journalism for the people” to a bigger audience.

In the last decade, the slow yet eventual increase in the speed of the internet in the Philippines and elsewhere in the world made strides on how news, especially in the multimedia platform is distributed in what is now the “social media” or the “new media.”

Davao Today strived to adapt to this information explosion in the World Wide Web to interconnect people’s issues from local struggles on land, livelihood, environment and human rights to the global narrative on war and economic progress among countries of the world.

Amidst the clutter, however, Davao Today remains true to its commitment and brand of journalism by giving prominent space for the marginalized sectors.

The magnitude of the World Wide Web created challenges for the Davao Today, Davao-based news team to deliver daily and even-up-to-minute content to its online subscribers, website visitors and social media audience.(davaotoday.com)
