DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Over nine thousand graduating high school students in the country have qualified for the Science Education Institute Scholarship Programs of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) this year.

In DOST-SEI’s Facebook page, it has announced that the number of qualifiers set an all-time high record of 9, 852 passers compared to 8,994 last year.

This is the highest number of passers since the scholarship program started in 1958.

The 2019 DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship Examination was held on October 21, 2018 with a total of 73,712 examinees.

A total of 5,819 academically talented graduates who belong to low-income backgrounds has qualified to be scholars under the RA 7687 Scholarship Program; while 4,033 have passed under the Merit Scholarship Program of the DOST-SEI.

“The scholarship will certainly allow the students to pursue their dreams in their desired fields in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in leading universities and colleges and will ultimately lead them to become key players in the country’s development once they practice their professions four or five years from now,” said Dr. Josette Biyo, DOST-SEI Director.

The new S&T scholars are set to receive PHP 7,000 allowance per month across all disciplines. They are also entitled to PHP 40,000 tuition fee subsidy per academic year; book allowance; MS/PE clothing allowance (one-time only); one economy-class round trip fare per year for those studying outside of their home province; and group accident insurance.

According to DOST, qualified scholars must enroll in any of University of the Philippines’ campuses; or in state universities and colleges; or private higher education institutions recognized as Centers of Excellence or Centers of Development by CHED; or with Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines Level III accreditation for the S&T priority programs.

After graduation, S&T scholars are required of return service in the country in their field of specialization equivalent to the number of years they enjoyed the scholarship.

“As early as now, we welcome these new scholars in the S&T community,” she said. “We are optimistic that they are more than qualified to be the experts that will lead this nation towards the development we always hoped for.”
