SP OKs temporary closure of streets for Davao festivities

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The 18th council of the Sangguniang Panlunsod of Davao City has already approved the temporary closure of some streets for the celebration of the 82nd Araw ng Davao.

The temporary closure was earlier requested by the City Tourism Office (CTO) to facilitate the different activities for the Araw ng Davao celebration.

Starting on March 9, half of the lane of Palma Gil Street, particularly in front of the Pasalubong Center will be closed to vehicles, starting at 2:00 p.m. to facilitate the Hudyaka Drum and Bugle Corps competition.

Half of the lane in the ingress portion of San Pedro Square behind Rizal Park Agila stage will also be closed to traffic on March 15 at 2:00 p.m. for the Parada Dabawenyo or the Civic Parade.

The SP also approved the full closure of Roxas Avenue, C.M Recto Avenue, Bonifacio Street, Pelayo Street to San Pedro Street from 3:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on March 16 for the conduct of Parada Dabawenyo or the Parade Proper.

The city government is also announcing the alternate routes that commuters can access during the closure of major thoroughfares.

These alternate routes include the J.P Laurel Avenue to Quirino Avenue to McArthur Highway; J.P Laurel to R Castillo Street to L. Garcia Street to Quezon Boulevard to Quimpo Boulevard to McArthur Highway; and from J.P Laurel Avenue to Cabaguio to L. Garcia Street to Quezon Boulevard to Quimpo Boulevard to McArthur Highway.

Travelers can also utilize the alternate south routes from McArthur Highway to Quirino Avenue to J.P Laurel Avenue; McArthur Highway to Magallanes Street to Quezon Boulevard; McArthur Highway to Sandawa Road to Quimpo Boulevard; and McArthur Highway to Quimpo Boulevard to Quezon Boulevard.

On the day of the Araw ng Davao, the city government said that a portion of C.M Recto Avenue from the Osmeña Park up to the China Bank and a portion of San Pedro Street from the Davao City Police Office, Camp Domingo Leanor to San Pedro Square will also be closed for the Beef Sharing activity from 4:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, Davao City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) Chief Dionisio Abude has asked the public to take some adjustments of their routes and travel time during the scheduled road closures to avoid heavy traffic.
