Tech-Voc trainees to compete for annual TESDA skills competition

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Technical-Vocational (Tech-Voc) trainees under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Davao Region (TESDA-11) are set to compete for the annual regional skills competition.

Twenty-nine Tech-Voc trainees from five provinces of Davao region will compete in 16 different skills areas from May 9 to 11 at the Regional Training Center-Korea Philippines Vocational Training Center (RTCKPVTC) in Tibungco here.

The skills areas include Automobile Technology, Beauty Therapy, Cooking, Electrical Installation, Graphic Design Technology, Hairdressing, Information Network Cabling, IT Network Systems Administration, IT Software Solution for Business, Mechanical Engineering CAD, Mechatronics, Fashion Technology, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning, Restaurant Service, Web Design, and Welding.

Engr. Lorenzo G. Macapili, TESDA-11 Director said the event aims to provide a venue for the competitors to showcase their skills, and for TESDA to assess the capacity and competence of tech-voc trainees, graduates, and industry workers in terms of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

The gold medalists will represent the Davao region in the Vis-Min (Visayas-Mindanao) Zonal and National Skills Competition.

Qualifiers from the national event will represent the country in the 2020 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Skills Competition in Singapore and World Skills Competition in China in 2021.

Last year, four competitors and five experts from Davao region represented the country and competed during the 12th ASEAN Skills Competition in Thailand.

Macapili said among them is Heinrich M. Omlaan who received the Medallion for Excellence Award for acquiring sufficient points to beat the competition standards in welding.

Another Davaoeño, Engr. Melanie M. Domingo, a hairdressing expert is set to represent the Philippines in Russia for the 2019 World Skills Competition.

“[We are] optimistic that the region will continue to produce competent and globally-competitive, skilled workers and to have more representatives for the high-level competitions,” Macapili added. (davaotoday.com)
