UP Mindanao postpones events in wake of COVID-19 threat

Feb. 17, 2020

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao has postponed all of the events related to its 25th founding anniversary this month.

The postponement is in solidarity with the City Government of Davao “in the enforcement of prudent measures discouraging the gathering of large crowds to prevent the possible transmission of COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease)”, UP Mindanao said in a press statement.

Among the postponed events were Legacy Lectures Series, originally scheduled on February 19; Kick-off Program for the 25th Founding Anniversary on February 20; and recognition ceremonies for employees and students on February 21.

Regular activities, in the meantime, will proceed with the appropriate precautionary measures as prescribed in the advisories from agencies such as the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

“Safeguarding the health and safety of our constituents and stakeholders is of primary concern to the university, and we enjoin everyone to take appropriate measures to this end,” the University said.

Last week, the City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has also announced the cancellation of 83rd Araw ng Dabaw major events in March to ensure public safety as cases of COVID-19 continue to increase worldwide.

Based on the latest update from the DOH on Monday, there are a total of 521 patients under investigations (PUIs) in the Philippines.

Of the 521 patients, 350 have already been discharged, while 171 are admitted. (davaotoday.com)
