DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Progressive lawmakers on Wednesday, December 6, filed a resolution to investigate the killing of a labor organizer here almost two weeks ago.

In a copy of the resolution, lawmakers under the Makabayan bloc want the Congress’ Committee on Human Rights to conduct an inquiry into the killing of Apolonio Maranan at Barangay Mandug, Buhangin District.

Maranan, who was also a member of Anakpawis Partylist, was killed on the night of November 25 while he was on his way to buy dinner for his family.

The lawmakers said Maranan’s wife, Teresita, recounted that she heard a series of gunfire minutes after her husband came out of the house.

The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“The victim’s family also disclosed that after the April 2017 burning of Lapanday’s equipment by alleged members of the New People’s Army (NPA), he observed that he was under military surveillance,” the resolution said.

Human rights group Karapatan said Maranan is the 55th victim of killing in Southern Mindanao Region under the present administration.

The Makabayan bloc added that Maranan “was among the first wave of civilian casualty of President Rodrigo Duterte’s threats of crackdown on activists whom he described as “legal fronts of the communists.” (davaotoday.com)
