DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Members of the media staged an indignation protest rally in Panabo City to call for justice for journalist Dennis Denora who was killed last June 7 by unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants.

Led by the Davao del Norte Press Council, around 150 media practitioners in Davao region condemned the brutal killing of Denora who was identified as a fearless critic in the province.

According to his colleague Pat Lucero, the killing of Denora worries the safety of mediamen in Davao del Norte. They fear for another possible attack against journalists who are vocal on issues especially about politicians.

“I am worried that anytime, they will just shoot us. We are working here as messengers but no one can guarantee us if we would still be alive tomorrow,” said Lucero

Radio blocktimer Rogelio “Tata” Butalid was assassinated by an alleged member of Tagum Death Squad on December 11, 2013. Butalid was a blocktimer for Radyo Natin 107.9 FM, whose program, “Ang Kamatuoran” (The Truth), was sponsored by the Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative-National Electrification Administration (Daneco-NEA). He was critical of officials of another faction of Daneco, the Cooperative Development Authority (Daneco-CDA).

On August 18, 2015, Gregorio Ybañez, publisher of the local newspaper Kabayan News and president of Davao del Norte Press and Radio-TV Club (DNRPC) was also shot to death. His killing was linked to the issue between two DANECO factions.

Media protesters urged the recently formed TASK FORCE DENORA to fast-track its investigation stating that “it will help guarantee a safe environment for journalists in Davao del Norte.” (davaotoday.com)
