May. 18, 2010

DAVAO CITY—General Delfin Bangit, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff, is offering to the next President-elect and the other newly-elected national government officials a briefing on matters regarding the AFP.

“After the proclamation mag-o-offer kami sa president ng briefing kasama na sa ibang halal sa national level (we will be offering a briefing to the president, as well as to other newly elected to national posts). That they will be able to learn from us the conditions in the armed forces, so that when they assume office they will know where they are coming from.” Bangit said during an interview with members of the Davao media.

The AFP chief was in Davao last Wednesday (May 12) to visit wounded soldiers and militiamen who were ambushed by New People’s Army guerillas in Maragusan last May 11 while escorting board of election inspectors en route to a municipal canvassing. Two Soldiers, two militia, one pollwatcher and one BEI was killed in the ambush.

Bangit said that one of the recommendations, which they will be pushing to the President-elect is the much-delayed modernization program of the AFP.

“Isa rin yung yung pangarap ng mga kawal isa na rin yun sa pangarap ng mga officers, isa yun sa bibigyan diin namin sa susunod na pag-uusap (that’s one of the dream of our soldiers, it’s also the dreams of all the officers, its one where we will be pushing for it in our next discussions),” Bangit said.

The AFP modernization was signed into law in 1995 and was planned for about 15 years with a expected budget of 331-billion pesos. However only about 28-billion pesos was utilized for the program which will be expiring this 2010. (PIA XI)
