May. 09, 2010

DAVAO CITY—More troops from the different units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are beefing up existing security forces in the city.

Colonel Oscar Lactao, commanding officer of the Task Force Davao, said there will be about 2,200 personnel coming from the AFP and the Philippine National Police (PNP) that will be deployed in the city.

Lactao said that 80 troops from the 10th Infantry Division (ID), 500 elements from the 69th Infantry Comelec Battalion, 66 personnel from the Eastern Mindanao Command, 60 coming from the Philippine Navy and 20 Philippine Air Force personnel will be deployed in Davao as augmentation force.

The TFD head said that although they have heard that the Commission of Elections is putting the city under their control, they have yet to receive an official written order for it.

Lactao said that if the order will come, they will welcome the order and just follow it.

In case of Comelec control, the administration of the city will be held by the Comelec. Lactao said whatever arrangements regarding security are welcome as the common goal is attaining honest, orderly, peaceful elections (HOPE).

Meanwhile 10th ID commanding general Major General Carlos Holganza is appealing to the public for calmness and patience in wake of persistent rumors on the no-election scenario.

“Huwag bigyan halaga ang mga text rumors na iyan, siguro eleven out of ten nyan ay mali (Don’t believe text rumors, maybe 11 out of those 10 texts are wrong.),” Holganza said.

He assured the public that the AFP and the PNP is committed to having HOPE. “Let us trust the institutions, let us trust the Comelec with the conduct of the elections.” Holganza added. (PIA XI)
