Philippines: Heightening its Campaign, Gabriela Goes on Air

Apr. 23, 2007

MANILA — May Gabriela sa bawat isa sa atin (There is a Gabriela in each of us). So goes television and movie actress Angel Locsin in a television advertisement for Gabriela Womens Party.

We are thankful that Gabrielas fight for womens rights meets with Angels advocacy for womens empowerment, the reason why Angel is endorsing us, said Gabriela Representative Liza Maza.

The television ad was launched this morning and will be broadcasted on national television next week. The ad can also be seen and downloaded at www.youtube.gabrielaparty .

Maza said this is part of the partys efforts to heighten its campaign for its reelection bid in the May 14 2007 elections. Although we are confident that women will support us this coming May, we are using various forms of media to reach out to more women to support Gabrielas advocacy.

Gabriela Womens Party will also be launching their webpage which will feature, among others, their partys programs and advocacy as well as their nominees profile. Our first three nominees Liza Maza, Luz Ilagan and Flora Belinan have a long history of fighting for the cause of women and we are proud of them. We see no reason why we should hide them, said Cristina Palabay, secretary general of Gabriela Womens Party.

Palabays statement takes a shot at what they call fake party listswhich their group revealed as being supported by Malacaang as part of the current administrations plan to disenfranchise opposition.

Palabay added that they will also make available online the confidential document from the Office of External Affairs of Malacaang revealing the the administrations plan to edge out progressive party lists like Gabriela Womens Party by fielding and supporting pro-administration party lists such as Babae Para sa Kaunlaran (Babae Ka), Agbiag Timpuyog Ilocano, League of Youth for Peace and Development (LYPAD) and Kalahi Advocates for Overseas Filipinos.

The Arroyo administrations efforts to disenfranchise us only compels us to heighten our fight. As the endorsement goes, Gabriela ka, lumaban ka, conluded Maza.###
