DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is prohibiting caravans and motorcades for election campaign in the city.

Duterte signed Executive Order No. 10 of 2022 on Monday, March 7, that will partially comply with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) resolution on the rules of face-to-face campaign activities.

The mayor’s EO will allow other campaign activities and will automatically grant election permits, except for motorcades and caravans.

Duterte cited the city’s “general welfare” as the reason for barring motorcades as this will cause heavy traffic in the city.

The mayor, in her “Special Hour” livestream on her Facebook page, said “Everyone is welcome” to the city for their campaigns.

Last February 8, the Davao for Leni was not granted a permit to hold a motorcade in time for the synchronized nationwide caravan. But they pushed it through the following day without a permit.

Motorcades and caravans are essential part of election campaigns.

Duterte, who is running for the vice presidency in tandem with Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos, Jr., conducted a nationwide caravan all over the country, often seen riding atop an armored vehicle.

Her Uniteam motorcade in Quezon City last December snarled traffic that angered motorists stuck in traffic.

Sara Duterte has not held a campaign rally in her bailiwick in Davao City, except for a rally in Tagum City last December. (davaotoday.com)
