DAVAO CITY — The new city director here urged members of the police force to work hard as the proposed increase for the salary of the policemen “comes with a price”.

Under the incoming administration of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, the minimum pay of the policemen might be doubled. The proposal is to make the entry pay for the police at P50,000 from a minimum pay of at least P20,000, including allowances.

According to Duterte’s running mate, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, the proposal is doable.

Cayetano said he has submitted the study for the salary increase of policemen to Duterte. It would cost the government an additional P50 billion , which Cayetano said can be sourced from the P350 billion to P400 billion unprogrammed funds in the budget next year.

Generals are also expected to receive more than P100,000 per month under the said proposal.

But, Police Senior Superintendent Michael John Dubria said the police force should see to it that they are deserving of the salary increase.

“Let us give justice to our profession and repay the people by delivering fair and prompt law enforcement services,” Dubria said.

“The promise by the President of a higher pay for the police comes with a price.

Let us make ourselves deserving of that increase,” he added.

The pay hike, Dubria said, is intended to make cops more honest.

“The President-elect has made sure that we will be assured of a better pay and even protection from lawsuits, of course understandably for work related situations,” Dubria added.

Dubria assumed post as the new city police chief after his classmate, Police Senior Superintendent Vicente Danao, Jr.’s term of two years and eight months ended on Friday, June 24.

Cleanse police ranks

Dubria called on the police to cleanse their ranks “of those who have gone astray.”

Duterte, during his thanksgiving speech in Davao City, revealed that there are three police generals who are allegedly involved in illegal drugs trade.

On June 4, two police officers in Davao Oriental province tested positive for illegal drug use.  Meanwhile, two members of the Tagum City Police station were found positive of using illegal drugs during a mandatory drug testing held on May 27.

“We must do our share. The people of Davao deserve the best the PNP can offer,” Dubria said.

Dubria said he will be assessing the performance of all the police stations in Davao City.

He said if there will be police officials who will be found non-performing of his duties, they will have a revamp. (davaotoday.com)
